Fixing Vertical Stringing: Simple Checks for Tighter Groups

If shots climb or drop through the group, the cause is usually support, pressure, or follow-through. Use this quick checklist to diagnose and tighten vertical.

Start with the base
• Front support: ensure the bipod feet are set and not skating; apply gentle, repeatable preload.
• Rear support: keep the bag rider flat and squeeze pressure consistent—no edge loading.
• Height: run the lowest workable shooting height for less flex and hop.

Pressure & position
• Shoulder pressure: firm and the same each shot; avoid “free recoil” wobble.
• Grip tension: light and repeatable; don’t steer the rifle with your hands.
• Body alignment: square hips/shoulders behind the bore so recoil tracks straight.

Rifle level & follow-through
• Level the rifle with an external bubble; don’t hold level with wrist torque.
• Break the shot, keep the trigger pinned briefly, and watch the reticle settle.
• If the reticle rises on recoil, shift balance slightly aft or reduce preload.

Mechanical checks
• Action screws and mounts torqued to spec.
• Scope not slipping; parallax set for the distance.
• Ammo/air consistency: confirm fill routine and shot velocity stability.

Drills that work
• Ten-shot cadence with identical shoulder pressure—note reticle return.
• Dry-fire on target to feel preload and follow-through without recoil.
• Paper at 100 m with a known good zero; adjust one variable at a time.

Next steps
Once vertical settles, confirm with a short live ladder and record dope. For steadier base performance, review bipod fundamentals and bench setup.
